Thoughts of an Art Major

Some people might be under the impression that being an art major is easy. That it's all fun and games and that 'all you do' is draw. And I will admit, it's one of the funnest majors out there, I'm not denying that. But I don't think people realize what an intense mental process art is. Just looking at homework, art majors are usually asked to turn out/turn in two complete, finished pieces each week. Average time for those, (for me at least) 10 hours. If it's a small project. That is ten hours of intense concentration and focus on detail. Not to mention preparation time. Sometimes it takes longer to set up the subject and prepare the materials than it actually does to draw. It always bugs me when someone asks 'could you draw this for me?' Maybe, if I have a couple days or weeks to think about it and learn about it. Don't get me wrong, half the fun of art is trying new things, but artists aren't machines. You can't put in an order and get exactly what you expect exactly when you expect it. For one thing, we have to take time to sleep (most of the time).

Moral of the story: Be nice to artists.

And just so this won't be a horribly cynical post, here's a fun sketch I did:

  1. Smile! We think you are wonderful! You just have to learn how to say, "No, I'm busy with another project." :)
